Meet Edgar Uriel Bernal
Edgar Uriel Bernal Gámez was born on March 14, 1984, in Monterrey, Nuevo León. From an early age, he showed interest in drawing, and during his adolescence, he immersed himself in graffiti, which allowed him to develop a consistent practice and a personal style in his early work.
In 2006, he enrolled at the Universidad Metropolitana de Monterrey to study Graphic Design. For a time, he alternated between both disciplines, working in print shops and participating in urban art festivals such as the Festival Internacional Cervantino in Guanajuato (2014), Transmuta (2017), and the creation of the mural From Barter to Commerce at Mercado Juárez (2021).
In 2016, he decided to dedicate himself fully to art, quitting his job as a designer and leaving Monterrey in search of experiences and learning that would enrich his expression in drawing and painting. In 2018, he moved to Mexico City, where he became involved in the cultural and artistic scene, focusing mainly on printmaking and painting. At Gabriel Macotela’s workshop, he deepened his understanding of the techniques and processes of La Ruptura. In 2019, he was selected for the Community Cultural Collectives program with the project Taller Mena Gráfica, through which he shared his knowledge of drawing and printmaking free of charge.
Devotion and curiosity are constants in Bern’s work. His art is a manifestation of his reflections and concerns, materialized in characters with touches of fantasy, textures, and material experimentation. His figurative style is expressed in portraits of people from his surroundings, seeking to capture the unique aura of each individual. His work features hybridizations of marine and terrestrial beings, the sun, and forms inspired by graffiti lettering—elements with which he most identifies and through which he explores identity, time, and human emotions.
His color palette moves between cool and warm tones, and his production spans various techniques: oil and acrylic in painting; ink, watercolor, pastel, and colored pencils in drawing; and linoleum as his primary medium in printmaking.
