Artist Statement – Rodrigo Cortez “Roots”
My work is a celebration of heritage, identity, and connection. Using acrylics, watercolors, and digital design, I create bold contemporary compositions that weave together traditional cultural influences with modern visual language. Each piece is a reflection of my belief that art can serve as both a mirror and a bridge—helping people see themselves more clearly while also building connections across differences.
Living in Northern Utah, I have witnessed the beauty and complexity of diverse communities. My creative process draws from personal history, shared stories, and symbols of cultural pride, transforming them into works that invite conversation and spark curiosity. Whether through a large-scale mural or an intimate gallery piece, my aim is to create art that not only resonates aesthetically but also carries meaning—encouraging viewers to reconnect with their own roots and to find common ground with others.
Art, for me, is an act of preservation and a gesture.
